Seth Godin-7 Years From Now

With the new year (2010) upon us tomorrow Friday January 1, 2010, this post from Seth Godin will give you something to ponder. Also, be sure to click on the link to the “I wrote this post” on his blog.

A friend worried out loud to me the other day, “I spent the last seven months doing this [job] and I have nothing to show for it. If I had known I would have spent seven months and gotten nothing, you can bet I would have done something a lot more fun.”

Ten years ago I wrote this post about the decade that ends today.
The oughts (the “uh-ohs”?) were a tough decade on a macro level. Front page news events will give the textbooks plenty to write about in the years to come.

But on a micro level, on a personal level, this was a decade filled with opportunity. The internet transformed our lives forever. Opportunities were created (and many were taken advantage of). And, like every decade, just about everyone missed it. Just about everyone hunkered down and did their job or did what they were told or did what they thought they were supposed to, and just about everyone got very little as a result.

Maybe ten years is too long a period of time to plan for. So how about seven?

Seven years from now, what will you have to show for what you’re doing right now?

If your answer is, “not much,” perhaps you should consider a new plan, one that might generate a different answer, or, at the very least, be a more fun way to waste seven years.

Thanks Seth for all the great posts in 2009. Looking forward to your new book. Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?

The question is will you sieze the opportunity?!

10 Ways for Baby Boomers to Get Their Resume Read

10 Ways for Baby Boomers to Get Their Resume Read

Baby Boomers Confidence is Key

You may be feeling uncertain about your ability to compete in an already competitive job search. But don’t let that deter you. You have years of experience under your belt and the skill level to match. So make sure you maintain your confidence throughout your job search process. It will shine through in your resume, cover letter, and face-to-face interview.Getting back into the workforce as a Baby Boomer isn’t an impossible task if you believe in your capabilities and make a strong effort to excel. The more proactive you are about putting yourself out there, the more success you will have in locating opportunities that can take your career to the next level.

Below are a few tips for your writing your resume and getting your resume read:

1. Construct your resume to read easily. Remember, resumes are reviewed quickly. Help the reader to scan your resume efficiently and effectively

Use bulleted sentences.
Resumes are read quickly.
Bullets make it easier for someone to quickly scan your resume and still absorb it

2. Put strengths first where they are more apt to be read.

3. Use action words prepared, developed, monitored, and presented.

4. Have someone else read your resume. A second set of eyes will always catch grammatical or spelling error and the person may add valuable input.

5. To avoid appearing out of touch, Sharon Armstrong, a career consultant in Washington, D.C., urged one client fearful of seeming too old to discuss her use of Twitter and Facebook during job interviews.

6. Sharon Armstrong also endorses the idea of keeping certain dates off resumes.

7. Once at the interview stage, Armstrong urges clients to prepare for questions like, “Aren’t you overqualified?” Older job seekers say they hear that frequently. Armstrong suggests they show enthusiasm for the job and make sure not to seem to be applying out of desperation.

8. Experts say some employers may be reluctant to hire people they assume are less flexible, more expensive or less agile with technology

9. Updating Your Resume If you’ve been out of the job market for a decade or more, updating your resume may be more challenging than you remember, especially when you factor in the Internet and possibly having to apply online. But that’s not all you have to think about. As a mature worker, you also have the challenge of creating a resume that showcases your years of experience without shining a spotlight on your age.

10. So how can you get this done? One way is by using a functional resume format that highlights specific skills rather than chronological timelines. When writing your skills, try going into detail regarding projects you’ve completed that have benefited your previous companies. You can also create a section that focuses on the computer technologies you’ve mastered or any training you’ve completed. All of these things can help employers focus more on your skills and talents, and less on your age.

Seth Godin-Permission Marketing Quote

“Marketing by interrupting people isn’t cost-effective anymore. You can’t afford to seek out people and send them unwanted marketing messages, in large groups, and hope that some will send you money.

Instead, the future belongs to marketers who establish a foundation and process where interested people can market to each other. Ignite consumber networks and then tet out the way and let them talk.” Seth Godin is the author of 12 books about ideas and marketing.

Rick Warren-Impress People or Influence Them

At some point in your life you must decide whether you want to impress people or influence people. You can impress people from a distance, but you must get close to influence them, and when you do that, they will be able to see your flaws. That’s okay. The most essential quality for leadershi is not perfection but credibility. People must be able to trust you, or they won’t follow you.

How do you build credibilty? Not by pretending to be perfect, but by being honest.

100 Year Old?s Club? How many Boomers will live that long?

My Mom is 88 and is still alert, drives everywhere and has no plans of slowing down. She lives in an “assisted living ” apartment complex. I would live in these apartments, 3 meals a day served, someone cleans her apartment weekly and they even provide toliet paper. Sounds like a deal to me….

She eats her meals with 5 other people and only 1 is below 80. She is really comfortable, plays ”the word game” every afternoon to keep herself mentally sharp. (The residents make words out of a single word.)

The article below really relays the fact we are just living longer.

WASHINGTON – It’s starting to get crowded in the 100-year-olds’ club. Great Video Lucy talks about….Redefining what it means to be ”old”

Once virtually nonexistent, the world’s population of centenarians is projected to reach nearly 6 million by midcentury. That’s pushing the median age toward 50 in many developed nations and challenging views of what it means to be old and middle-age.

The number of centenarians already has jumped from an estimated few thousand in 1950 to more than 340,000 worldwide today, with the highest concentrations in the U.S. and Japan, according to the latest Census Bureau figures and a report being released Monday by the National Institute on Aging.

Their numbers are projected to grow at more than 20 times the rates of the total population by 2050, making them the fastest growing age segment.

Demographers attribute booming long-livers to decades of medical advances and improved diets, which have reduced heart disease and stroke. Genetics and lifestyle also play a factor. So, too, do doctors who are more willing to aggressively treat the health problems of people once considered too old for such care.

“As long as I’m not mentally and physically infirm, I’d like to live as long as I can,” she said.

Japan, known for its low-fat staple of fish and rice, will have the most centenarians in 2050 — 627,000, or nearly 1 percent of its total population, according to census estimates.

Japan pays special respect to the elderly and has created a thriving industry in robotics — from dogs and nurses to feeding machines — to cater to its rapidly aging population.

Italy, Greece, Monaco and Singapore, aided by their temperate climates, also will have sizable shares of centenarians, most notably among women.

In the U.S., centenarians are expected to increase from 75,000 to more than 600,000 by midcentury. Those primarily are baby boomers hitting the 100-year mark. Their population growth could add to rising government costs for the strained Medicare and Social Security programs.

“The implications are more than considerable, and it depends on whether you’re healthy or sick,” said Dr. Robert N. Butler, president and chief executive of the International Longevity Center, a New York-based nonprofit group specializing in aging. “Healthy centenarians are not a problem, and many are. But if you have a demented, frail centenarian, they can be very expensive.”

Butler predicted a surge in demand in the U.S. for nursing homes, assisted living centers and other special housing, given the wave of aging boomers who will be at increased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. He said federal and state governments may have to reevaluate retirement benefits, age limits on driving and Medicare coverage as they struggle to redefine what it means to be old.

“We don’t have a major coordinating figure such as a White House counselor to reach across all departments, and we need one,” Butler said.

Wan He, a Census Bureau demographer who co-wrote the aging report, said families also will face more pressure. She noted that because of declining birth rates, there will be fewer family members to provide support if an older parent gets sick.

“For the current middle-aged people, it will be comforting to think they can live past 80,” she said. “At the same time, we might see 70-year-old ‘kids’ taking care of their centenarian parents. It’s a very stressful job, it’s not paid, and it can have a lot of psychological influences for the caretakers.

Nikon Coolpix 3100 Camera

Review:

Pros

1. Has many desirable features like 3MP, video out, only 2 AA batteries etc.
2. Nice looking and very small in size with good grip. Light weight too.
3. Uses [inexpensive] CF cards.
4. Easy menus and scene modes to use. Modes give you some control over what camera does.
5. Great macro pictures.
6. Night shots are very nice if used with tripod or some supporting surface.
7. Good manual, explains differences between the modes.
8. Has a very affordable accessory kit with case, batteries and fast charger here on Amazon.

Con's

1. Reliability is doubtful. Battery compartment door is very flimsy.
2. Movie mode is junk, no sound and movie sizes very small.
3. A bit thick, making it tougher to pocket.
4. No rechargeable batteries or charger in the box. And still costs more than it competition.
5. No AF assist light or manual mode.
6. One of the most expensive 3MP cameras. Esp since it has poor features and nothing bundled with it.
7. Slow to read/write to CF cards, manual recommends only Lexar/Sandisk cards. Aren't CF cards made to a standard?
8. Lens comes out even while downloading pics or reviewing them and never retracts while the camera's on. (Only way to keep it folded is to start in setup mode and then go to review pics.)
9. Low battery indicator not good, need to do a firmware update to fix it. to make it worse lens was stuck out even when it ran out of battery.

Purchase used or refurbished on eBay and save major $$.

What Does Refurbished Phone System or Phone Mean?

What Does Refurbished Phone System or Phone Mean?

A refurbished phone system is one where the equipment has been lightly used before. You'll find that with a refurbished phone system, you can still expect optimal performance and a long-life span from your equipment. Another thing that you might not expect is that you can get plenty of name-brand phones from a refurbished phone system dealer. You can find brands like Avaya, Norstar, and Nortel, all brands that have staying power in the business world, and you will be able to see that they perform just as well as their reputations imply.
Whether you're starting your first business or needing to replace an older phone system, you need to explore all the options out there. While your first instinct might be to buy a new system, you'll find that this is not necessarily the best solution for you. A good phone system can help you grow from three employees to three hundred, and if you invest wisely, you'll be able to keep up with the fast changing world of communication and make sure that your business keeps pace, too!

You do need to go to reputable dealer for refurbished phones and phone systems, however. For instance, at simplyusedphones.com you'll be able to see that every phone goes through a 24-point checklist to ensure the used phone system is in good condition for resale. This check is extremely important and you can see that the phones are held to a high standard when they are turned over to customers. A refurbished phone system can be a terrific performer for you company, but keep in mind that you still have to make wise investment decisions!

One of the advantages of having a refurbished phone system is that it has a known lifespan and a known rate of durability. One thing to keep in mind is that the newest technology is not always the best; it is prone to bugs and faults. A refurbished phone system can help take care of this as it is a known quantity that can be expected to perform reliably.

These phones have also proven themselves to be quite sturdy, and you'll find that refurbished phone systems tend to have less problems than their brand new counterparts; many electric devices fail due to manufacturer error, and those faults are discovered in a few months of original shipping. This is not a problem for a refurbished phone system, and you'll be able to hit the ground running!

To make money with Ad.ly, your Twitter account must be at least 120 days old and you must have at least 50 followers. If you meet these two requirements, then go apply now! It doesn't cost anything and you have complete control over which ads you accept or reject. You get to set your own prices as well, but Ad.ly will always try to sell your tweets for the highest price possible. That's how John Chow got the $1,000 tweet.

John Chow shares, “I've been tweeting for dollars for a few months now and it's proven to be the easiest money I have ever made online. It took less than a minute to write that tweet that made me $1,000. That works out to an hourly rate of over $60,000 an hour!”

Even if you only get $5 per tweet, that still works out to $300 per hour for a one minute tweet. Where else can you get that kind of pay rate?

Anybody Can Make Money Online

Michael Jones' The Affiliate Code
Read his amazing story below.

Anybody can make money online....

I mean literally anybody.

I'm not kidding here, or just hyping you up. It's completely true.

You don't need some fancy degree, you don't need to know how to program, and you certainly don't need to be a computer expert...

Put it this way:

If you found this page, you're smart enough to earn a profit online.

It's that simple.

Heck, let me put it another way... if you can check your email, you can make money online.

Insane amounts of money. More than you could possibly spend.

Seriously, once you get down to it, making money from the internet is no harder than microwaving your dinner or making a sandwich.

And you can do those things right?

Well, congratulations. You've got what it takes to make money online.

And yeah, I know it's tough to take that in right now - you think I'm either kidding around or just outright lying don't you?

Well, I'm not doing either, and if you just keep reading, you'll see exactly how simple it is.

You see, I understand exactly where you're coming from.

Because I've been there. I've sat where you are now, and I've been sucked in by all the crazy opportunities you see out there... probably the same ones that sucked you in too.

I've lived through the crappy jobs and hated my boss... man, sitting in traffic each and every morning to make it on time to a job that I couldn't stand. It's so stressful isn't it?

And let's not forget the money... struggling to pay every bill that came. And all the while living in terrible apartments, just wishing I could afford better...

I mean, it's pretty embarrassing to be a full grown man living out of a damp-ridden one room apartment right?

My life was honestly better when I lived in my parents' basement.

And Things Were About To Get A Lot Worse

You see, one miserable Sunday night, I found a "business opportunity" on the internet.

And I say miserable Sunday night, because back when I worked, EVERY Sunday was miserable - I'd spend the whole day totally depressed about going back to work on Monday...

But anyway, this business opportunity looked like the exact thing I needed - lots of pictures of cheesy guys leaning on sportscars outside their mansions... and more importantly, they promised boatloads of cash... fast.

So I bought it - and boy, it wasn't cheap.

Unfortunately it turned out to be hogwash - one of those "multi-level" schemes. You know the stuff where you have to persuade all your family and friends to join up underneath you?

It sucked.

But I still wanted to get away from my job, and out of my tiny apartment, so I didn't stop looking for other ways to make money.

Every night I'd finish work, rush home, and be glued to my computer - just scouring the internet, looking for the one thing that could actually make me some money...

I'd be up until 2 or 3 in the morning - there were days when I didn't even sleep, I just stayed up all night searching online, and went straight to work.

That's how desperate I was...

You see by then I'd racked up a monster credit card bill buying up just about everything I could find about making money online...

Things were getting tougher and tougher, I was slowly spiralling into a mess of debt...
... and when I found it, it was like a bolt from the blue - like a gift from Heaven itself.

It was called Affiliate Marketing, and it really was exactly what I'd been looking for - a way to make as much money as I wanted, with very little work. And the best part was that I didn't have to sell anything, deal with customers, nothing like that.

This was a real revelation to me, and pretty soon I was making money.

Just a little at first, as I experimented, trying to find different ways of working.

Review from eBay purchaser: I was immediately impressed with the ease of use on all of the Magellan products. When I went into Best Buy to try some of them out, I picked up a Magellan GPS and immediately knew how to use it without any books or manuals.

The touch screen interface is very intuitive and user friendly. When I make a wrong turn or go off route to avoid traffic, the device reroutes immediately alerts me that it is rerouting and completes the new directions in less than 5 seconds every time. Since I bought this item, I have not gotten lost once. I travel lot and this unit has gone with me to Houston, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and to my hometown, Dallas.

I could not be more satisfied! The only con to this item is the fact that it is a relatively some newer roads may not be listed. The maps are about 2 years old, but they are easily upgraded on Magellan's website using your computer and the USB cable that comes with it. You can also buy maps on CD and preloaded onto a SD card.

This unit gets long battery life and the car adapter and AC adapter ensure that you will never run out of power. The longest I have used it without recharging is 3 hours and the batteries were showing no signs of giving out after that amount of time. You will be thoroughly impressed. All of my friends and family are green with envy when they ride with me!

Touch the simple menu on the large 3.5" color display to get an instant route to virtually anywhere in seconds. The intuitive interactive screen shows your route and position on the map, plus distance to destination, arrival time, street names and more. Turn-by-turn voice guidance offers worry-free directions without even looking at the screen.

Magellan's QuickSpell™ feature intelligently searches and checks spelling while entering addresses and POIs, making it easy to find what you're looking for with just few touches of the screen. Search POIs by name or category, near your position or near any city. Interactive onscreen icons show nearby services. Touch an icon to see the address and phone number (when available) and get an instant route.

Store locations in the Address Book for easy navigation on recurring trips. Set the Home button to your house or any location to find your way back from virtually anywhere. And backup your personal data using your own SD cards.

The SiRFstarIII™ GPS receiver and built-in high-sensitivity antenna provide the fastest position acquisition in the industry for reliable navigation. SmartDetour™ prompts you to route around sudden slow freeway traffic.

The integrated rechargeable battery provides navigation for up to three hours when power is unavailable.

Automobile GPS Reviews

Compare Auto GPS of the Garmin Nuvi 765T which is one of the newer widescreen Auto GPS units in the Nuvi line and offers several key upgrades over the Nuvi 760 offering that we think are useful and worth consideration when shopping for a Automobile GPS.

The text to speech and widescreen Car GPS units are worth paying the additional money for, and being at the high end of the Garmin Automobile GPS line, the Nuvi 765T has both. That's not all though, as Garmin has seen their way to adding in a few other goodies to keep people interested and enticed enough to put the Nuvi 765 high on their list.

Let's take a look at the features of the Garmin Nuvi 765T to see what it has to offer....

Great Deals on eBay for new or used.

The key features that the Garmin Nuvi 765T has that are above and beyond the Nuvi 760 are:

Free Lifetime Traffic - The "T" designator gets you lifetime traffic on the units. A strategic change for Garmin who has had a subscription model on their units until now. The Nuvi 765T has TMC Traffic. The Free traffic is supported by ads that appear on your GPS. Now before you say "I don't want any ads on my new GPS!" you should understand that they are pretty unobtrusive and only show up if you are sitting still for more than 10 seconds.

Lane Assist - "Know the Lane Before it's Too Late" - Garmin brings Lane Assist to its line, which I think is great. It helps you decide which ramp to take when you hit complicated highway situations. I like this a lot and I think that on any intersection that is slightly more complicated than a standard exit ramp, the image that reflects reality makes a big difference when you are navigating in unfamiliar territory.

3-D Buildings - Garmin is now bringing 3-D buildings to the Nuvi 7X5T line with semi-transparent representations of the actual buildings that are there. Cool stuff; a fun new development that will continue to make the GPS view look like the view out your windshield.

Faster Route Calculations - Garmin has changed how and when it calculates routes for the Nuvi 765T and others in this release. The routes are calculated sooner - like when you select a Point of Interest, and so when you hit "Go" it is probably mostly done with the calculation. It makes for a much better experience; a LOT less time tapping your fingers at the end of the driveway for longer routes.

HotFix - This is Garmin's terminology for a technology that speeds satellite acquisition times. This technology has the unit remembering where the satellites will be up to three days into the future so that when you turn it on, the time to satellite lock is a LOT faster.

Great Deals on eBay for new or used.

Other Great Features:

Text to Speech - of course this higher end unit has text to speech, and it offers a good set of voices that you can use with different accents, etc.

North American Maps - comes with Maps of the US and Canada as well as Puerto Rico.

Bluetooth HandsFree - This allows you to use the Garmin as a handsfree unit for your Bluetooth enabled phone. This is the key difference between the Nuvi 755T and the Nuvi 765T units. I have used Bluetooth handsfree capabilities on numerous Garmin units with my iPhone Blackberry and various Moto phones with great success. You can check phone compatibility at the Garmin Website. Unlike some GPS units, the protocols that Garmin uses allows you to import your phonebook off the phone as well as "recent" phone calls making the Garmin a nice hub of calling capability. The pairing of the GPS and the phone is easy and can be done by most people without the use of any manual.

Optimized Routes - The Nuvi 700 series offers a nice feature that allows you to enter in several stops along a route, and get the Nuvi to optimize the route for fastest travel. This can be very helpful when doing a lot of work or shopping or house hunting in an unknown area.

Garmin Garage; Download fun car icons - Garmin has opened up the Garmin Garage where you can easily download new "car" icons to your computer and load them into your Nuvi 765T. The process is easy and they offer everything from a kid on a tricycle, a flying slice of pizza to space ships....

I'm sure by now you are well aware that there are those who have reported HUGE amounts of money being made with their online businesses. What you may not be aware of is the amount of work involved in generating those "sales" (not always net profit, mind you ... this isn't "spendable" income in a lot of cases.)

That brings me to the fourth reason why I love affiliate marketing...

Top 9 Halloween Dog Costumes 2009

We have 2 Boxer dogs, see picture, we love them dearly and have not put them in Halloween Dog Costumes. However, it does not stop us from looking at the Halloween pet costumes we see on Halloween.

This year we started doing some research on which Halloween dog costumes might be a personality fit for our Boxers. We were amazed at all the different dog costumes and we wanted to share our 8 favorite costumes.

Whether you are going to put your dog in a costume or not, if you love dogs, the dog costumes are great fun. Clink on the links or the picture to see a larger picture of the dog costume or just go browsing to look at the other Halloween Dog costumes.

Hope you enjoy…Mark, Gabe and Luke
